Thank
you for being a valuable addition to the BAA membership in 2009
1) Your BAA 2009 dues
funded the following advances:
- Recruited spectacular Volunteers from the BAA
membership to serve as Board members (we welcome any and all
help--join us!)
- Expanded BAA certification program from one to three courses
- Published signature white paper “Business Architecture – An Emerging Profession”
- Created Chicago Chapter. Initial meeting held October
2009 was a success.
- Established committees to develop and oversee efforts in
regard to:
- Member Services
- Communities Services – supporting interest groups and
chapters
- Relationship Services – promoting collaborative affiliations
with corporate leaders and other professional organizations
- Educational Services
- Marketing/Communications
- Technology
- Corporate Affairs
- Held first in a series of Fireside Chats to provide a forum
for sharing topics of interest within the Business Architecture
community and provide networking opportunities
- Redesigned BAA website
- Participated in three corporation-sponsored events presenting
views of Business Architecture in their environments
Last
year the BAA had three corporate events hosted by companies that are
leading the way in business architecture. Teams from different
companies were able to interact together and share their mutual experiences on
establishing business architecture teams, their day-to-day activities, and
their challenges, and how to engage with senior level management within your
companies. This year we want to expand that scope to having corporate
events that will help those of you from experienced teams connect with
others who are going through the same challenges, and some of you that are from
newer teams. With your help we can add more corporate events,
entice more companies to participate and host the events, and provide an ever
expanding set of real world experiences that can help you excel in
being a business architect.
2)
Your 2010 BAA membership will fund a great
expansion of the profession through:
- Launch of a comprehensive marketing campaign to
bring awareness of Business Architecture and the value Business Architects can
bring to senior corporate management
- Launch of a certification campaign to encourage
greater numbers of professionals to obtain their Certified Business Architect (CBA™)® certificate and meet the
demand generated by this marketing campaign
- Completion of the BAA™ Accreditation Program and
materials for evaluating and accrediting university Business Architecture Programs
- Outreach campaign to encourage universities to
establish a Business Architecture program within their MBA programs
- Continuous improvement in the quality of
information available on the BAA website including member only content
- Expansion of the number of BAA™ Chapters and
Interest Groups
- Webinar and Podcast events
- Business Architect as a career: What it is
like including competency models, job descriptions and white papers
describing how to be a successful Business Architect.
A long going concern
of the BAA has been how business architects are hired and their career
progression. Last year we mapped out some of the competencies and had
fireside chats on the current business architect job market and where we see it
heading. This year we are going to formalize this into actual job
descriptions and references that will guide HR departments in their search for
business architects and how you, as a business architect, can progress through
your career.
These important activities will increase the
number of hiring managers who are aware of the work you do and the value you
bring. These activities will increase the number of Business Architecture jobs
available. And, instead of spending your interview time explaining what a Business
Architect is and why they need one, you will instead be demonstrating why you
are the best person for their job. This is the return on your BAA
investment.
3) Beginning March
1, 2010 the following will be available exclusively for members:
- Competency Model: Skills and proficiencies
required for the profession
- Engagement Model: Methodology to
successfully approach a client engagement
- Exclusive Member-to-Member search function
- A relevant Business Case (including methodologies
and tools)
- Additional white papers as they become available
- Job Descriptions and Postings
- Event discounts
- PowerPoint decks to explain what Business
Architecture is and the value a Business Architect brings to your manager,
their manager and your organization’s corporate management.
4) Please volunteer
This organization is made up of working
professionals just like you. We are interested in building this
profession and together we will all benefit from its expansion. We are all
volunteers, giving our time as we can. Each hour you can donate puts us one hour
closer to our goal of the Business Architect becoming a standard and respected
role within the organization.
In Summary:
- The benefits of your association with the Business Architects
Association continue to increase in value.
- The influence of the organization as a governing body in the
Business Architecture world continues to increase in strength.
- Your career will continue to benefit from the strength and
power of the BAA organization.
An important point of any profession is the
interaction with others like you. Recognizing this, the BAA established
its first member chapter this year. They also launched fireside chats
that are more interactive and personnel than the traditional slide decks,
podcasts, and webcasts that we are all inundated with. We are going to continue
this going forward establishing new chapters have even more fireside chats, and
increase the number of opportunities for you to connect with other business
architects.
The BAA has been passionate, from the beginning,
on how to educate and develop business architects. Last year tremendous strides
were made in moving from a single class in business architecture to a suite of
classes that cover how to do business architecture in even greater
detail. Today this is limited to the MBA and Professional training within DePaul
University. In the next year we will be making this available on-line and
at other universities. These courses will be available to business
architects like you anywhere in the world.
The CBA Certified Business Architect designation
has been a part of BAA from its earliest days. We continue to get more
and more business architects with the CBA designation. In the coming year
we plan to increase the awareness of the CBA in the business world as the de facto
designation for business architects.
